SDA Alumni Week '17 - Movement/Voice workshop

All of us are born with multiple skills for interactive communication, not the least of which is the resilient voice as freely expressed during infancy. Nothing pierces the air as clearly as the baby's voice in need of love, attention, food, or even just a diaper change! At some point, however, civilization encroaches and we are taught that we are too loud, too needy, too dramatic, or just too much. We learn quickly how to censor ourselves, and these constricting messages soon become embedded in the very depths of our musculature, forming habits that may help us survive polite society, but become a death knell for the expressive artist.

Using the technique developed by the internationally renowned voice teacher Kristin Linklater, Brent Blair trains actors by using physical exercises to unlock habitual tensions that prevent actors from accessing the free and full range of their expressive voice with an ease of effort. As a therapist with a Jungian background, he also investigates how patterns of constraint have become structured systems of survival that must be understood before they are removed or reduced.
